Celebrating 40 Years of Grace Company

Forty years ago, Grace Company started with a simple idea: quilting could be easier.

What began as a conversation between a mother and her son has grown into a company whose quilting machines, frames, and accessories are used by quilters around the world. For 40 years, we’ve been focused on one thing: finding better ways to solve the challenges quilters face. And as we look back on everything that brought us here, one thing stands out more than anything else: we couldn’t have done it without the quilting community. The quilters who shared their ideas. The ones who told us what worked and what didn’t. The ones who challenged us to think differently and inspired us to keep creating. So, this September, we’re celebrating 40 Years of Grace and you’re invited.

From a Quilter’s Observation to the First GraceFrame

Every great idea has a starting point. For Grace Company, that starting point came from a quilter named Grace. Grace was a home quilter who noticed that there were things missing from the quilting tools available at the time. She shared her observations with her son, never knowing that those conversations would eventually inspire him to create a better quilting frame. When he asked Grace what he could build to help quilters like her, she closed her eyes and remembered a handmade quilting frame from her childhood. Working from that memory, he set out to recreate the experience of that frame for other quilters.

That first design became the GraceFrame. And with it, Grace Company was born.

The Early Years: Just Keep Showing Up

The first GraceFrame didn’t launch with a massive marketing campaign or a warehouse full of inventory. Instead, our founder packed up the frame, drove to the Houston International Quilt Festival, and set up a booth with his mother and wife. They told their story, demonstrated their frame, and sold enough to come back the following year. Then they did it again. And again.

As our founder recalls: “In the early years, it was sometimes just me and my mother running the booth. We just kept showing up.” That willingness to keep showing up became part of Grace Company’s story. Over the next four decades, the company continued to grow, innovate, and develop new solutions for quilters—from the first GraceFrame to quilting automation, machine quilting frames, longarm machines, and space-saving options designed to fit quilting into homes of all sizes.

40 Years of Innovation

The quilting industry has changed dramatically over the past 40 years, and Grace has continued to evolve right alongside it.

Here are just a few milestones from our journey:

And we're not finished yet.

Built by Grace. Inspired by Quilters.

While our products have changed over the years, one thing hasn't: we listen to quilters.

Just as our founder listened to his mother all those years ago, we continue to listen to the people who use our products every day. Your feedback helps shape what we create next. Your questions help us identify where improvements can be made. Your quilting challenges inspire us to find new solutions. That relationship between Grace and the quilting community is at the heart of everything we do.

Our machines, frames, and accessories are designed and manufactured by our team. That means we're involved in the process from the earliest stages of development through production. We know our products because we build them. But for us, it's about more than simply creating a machine or frame. It's about creating tools that work the way quilters need them, whether you're quilting in a dedicated studio, at the kitchen table, or wherever your creativity takes you. After 40 years, we're still asking the same basic question that started it all: how can we make quilting better?
