Quilting is for Everyone: Jackie

“Quilting is for everyone.”

That’s what Jackie has written as her bio on TikTok, and it’s at the core of her quilting journey. Jackie taught herself to quilt more than ten years ago through YouTube and Pinterest tutorials, and now she’s taken to social media to help others do the same.

In her videos, Jackie works through a variety of sewing and quilting projects. She always shares what she likes and doesn’t like about the patterns she uses, the alterations she makes to customize each one, and the advice she’d give to anyone attempting the pattern in the future.

Sharing Everything She’s Learned

This past May, Jackie participated in “Me-Made-May” by creating her own clothing items—from a maxi dress for herself to a hoodie for her nephew to throw pillows for her living room couches.

On each video, Jackie’s viewers chime in with comments of support—praising her finished projects and her fabric choices and asking questions. Jackie always takes time to answer every question.Cat sitting on a quilt block

She dedicates entire videos to explaining leader-ender projects, her process for picking fabrics, how to attach a neck band to a shirt or dress, and anything else her followers might wonder about. Jackie steps up to fill the gaps that self-taught sewers and quilters trip up on when following video tutorials or step-by-step projects. Her favorite question is always “How do I start quilting?”

She’s happy to share what she’s learned, and to point beginners to the resources and just-starting-out projects she’s found that make it easy to dive in to quilting.

Your Online Quilting Friend (and Teacher)

It’s Jackie’s relatability that makes her videos so approachable. Sometimes her cat hops onto her sewing table, blocking the view of her machine and project. In one video, she shows all the places she stows her Cutie Tabletop Fabric Frame while she and her family play Settlers of Catan on the kitchen table. Sometimes her husband drops by or sings a line from a song in the background. Her kids pass in and out of frame or model the garments Jackie makes. Once, a chicken wanders in from outside and clucks and flaps around in the background before it’s safely shepherded back into the yard.

Most of all, Jackie is willing to tell it like it is. She tells her viewers if she doesn’t like a certain product or if she wouldn’t recommend a pattern. She still posts the videos when her projects don’t turn out, or she makes mistakes. She stresses that, while there’s room for everyone in quilting, and there’s no wrong way to quilt, not everyone will love the process. So, she gives beginners ideas on how to try it out without committing to spend exorbitant amounts of money or time, just in case quilting isn’t for them. In short, she has your back. She started her social media accounts to help other people fall in love with quilting and sewing, and it shows.  She’s the sewing friend you wish you had.

You can find Jackie's patterns and kits on her website, or follow along with her latest projects on her TikTok or Instagram
