Turn Your Fabric Scraps into Beautiful Crumb Fabric (and a FREE Pattern for a Star Quilt!)

If you have a growing pile of tiny fabric scraps, don't throw them away just yet! Crumb quilting is one of the easiest ways to turn those leftover pieces into brand-new fabric that you can use in future projects. It's a fun, creative process that reduces waste, gives every scrap a purpose, and lets you create something completely unique.

The best part? There's no right or wrong way to do it.

Step 1: Start Sewing Your Scraps Together

Begin by grabbing two random fabric scraps and sewing them together.

Try not to overthink your fabric choices. In the past, I have had Halloween fabric sewn right next to Christmas fabric and believe it or not, it all came together beautifully in the finished piece! Crumb quilting is all about embracing the unexpected. Keep adding one scrap at a time, sewing each new piece onto your growing fabric. Your scraps don't need straight edges or perfectly matching shapes. Odd angles, curves, and irregular pieces are all part of the charm.

After each seam, press your fabric open before adding the next piece. Pressing as you go keeps everything nice and flat, making it much easier to continue building your crumb fabric.

Tip: Keep a Square Ruler Nearby

One thing I always like to have nearby is a square ruler to help me gauge the size of my crumb fabric as it grows. I'm using my TrueCut 12.5" x 12.5” Square Ruler, and since my finished block needs to be 11.5", it's the perfect way to check that I'm creating a large enough section before trimming. Rather than guessing, I can simply lay the ruler over my fabric and quickly see if I've reached the size I need.

 

Step 2: Keep Building Until You Have a Full Piece of Fabric

Continue adding scraps one piece at a time until you've created a solid section of fabric that's larger than your desired finished size. Don't worry if the edges are uneven or if some pieces stick out at funny angles. Once your crumb fabric is large enough, use your ruler and rotary cutter to square it up. After trimming, you'll have a perfectly usable piece of fabric that's ready to be treated just like any fabric.

Turn Your Crumb Fabric into a Quilt

For this project, I designed a beautiful star quilt that really lets the crumb fabric shine. The solid background creates plenty of contrast, making every colorful scrap stand out.

The quilt is made up of three main components:

• Crumb fabric squares
• Solid background squares
• Half-square triangle (HST) and half-square-quarter-square triangle (HSQST) blocks that create the star points

Around the outside of the quilt, half-square triangles form the border, tying the entire design together. The free pattern walks you through assembling the quilt, but let's first learn how to make the triangle blocks that give this quilt its striking star design.

Step 3: Make the Half-Square Triangles

Start with one crumb fabric square and one background fabric square, both cut to the same size (11.5” x 11.5”). Place the fabrics right sides together. Using a marking pencil or fabric-safe marker, draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner. This is your cutting line. Not your stitching line.

Next, sew a ¼-inch seam on both sides of the marked line.

Once both seams are sewn, carefully cut directly along the drawn line.

 When you open the pieces, you'll have two half-square triangle blocks.

Give each block a good press before moving on to the next step.

Step 4: Make the Half-Square-Quarter-Square Triangles

Now it's time to turn one of those half-square triangles into a half-square-quarter-square triangle block. First, trim your half-square triangle block to 11.5 inches. Then place it right sides together with another 11.5-inch crumb fabric square.A half-square-quarter-square triangle block is exactly what its name suggests—one half of the block is a half-square triangle, while the other half becomes a quarter-square triangle. Just like before, draw a diagonal line across the block. This time, make sure the line is perpendicular to your existing seam, rather than parallel to it.

Again, sew a ¼-inch seam on both sides of the marked line. Once you've finished sewing, cut directly along the marked line and press the blocks open.

You'll now have two half-square-quarter-square triangle blocks, which will become the star points in your quilt.

Finish Your Quilt

With your crumb fabric made and your triangle blocks complete, you're ready to start assembling the quilt.

It's amazing how a pile of seemingly random scraps can transform into a bold, colorful design full of personality. Every crumb quilt is one of a kind, and that's what makes them so special. So don't worry about matching fabrics or making everything perfect just have fun, and enjoy watching your scraps become something beautiful.
