The time-honored tradition of quilting has the ability to both bless and connect people across generations. Whether it’s the gift of a baby quilt or something to commemorate a milestone - each quilt reminds both the quilter and the quilt recipient how important they are to each other.
The first quilt I made caused me to not touch quilting for 20 years. In the early 90’s I made a country blue quilt as a high school graduation gift for my sister. There were no rotary cutters, rulers, or mats. I made templates out of cardboard and traced the design onto fabric. All of my fabric squares were hand cut. I pieced the quilt with a sewing machine using anything but an accurate 1/4” seam allowance. The batting was all polyester and I hand quilted the whole thing. As difficult as this project was, that quilt is still in use today. It sits in a basket in my sister’s living room and has comforted her family for over 25 years.
I am a self-taught quilter, however I’ve been sewing since I was twelve years old. Before I truly embraced quilting I was familiar with all types of sewing, so the transition to quilting was not that difficult. I quilt for the love of sewing. As a lifelong sewist I always want to make something from fabric. Whether it’s a garment, a bag, or a quilt, I truly love to cut into fabric and watch it transform into something new
